Père Lachaise Cemetery. A beautiful yet eerie place with winding cobblestone paths, old trees and unique tombs. The cemetery is home to 300 - 400 cats who slink around and casually lounge in rays of sunshine on top of tombs. If you are lucky enough to see one, it definitely adds to the creepy ambiance.
I loved coming here. Some of the tombs and crypts have fallen into disrepair, some are flawless. The remains of some amazing people have been laid to rest there: Édith Piaf, Frédéric Chopin, Balzac and Oscar Wilde - to name a few. It is a beautiful and peaceful place in the middle of Paris.
I’ll admit, when I went to Père Lachaise I was on a mission to see Jim’s grave. Most of the graffiti has been cleaned up and removed from neighboring tombs… but some is still there, leading the way to Jim.
The bronze bust has been removed (due to repeated vandalism) His grave marker is inscribed with the Greek phrase ΚΑΤΑ ΤΟΝ ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ ΕΑΥΤΟΥ, literally meaning “according to his own demon” but interpreted as “true to his own spirit”
I prefer the latter.
Jim, I will love you forever.
